Mare shows the boys how it’s done at Feria!
Aurora KR, bred by Ketcham Ranch and owned by Yeguada Alexander (Nick Alexander Phillips) competed this past weekend at Feria Del Caballo Espanol at City of Industry. She was shown both in morphology, where she not only placed second in her division, but was also awarded best movement. For those of you unfamiliar with ANCCE sanctioned shows, horses over 4 years of age are shown in hand (morphology) and perform a ridden test (functionality), similar to a dressage test. Both of these scores are added together to achieve the final score. Morphology counts for 75% and Functionality, 25%. The functionality test is required for stallions, but optional for mares. Over the years, there have not been many mares that have competed in the functionality. Often, mares over 3 are used as broodmares and not ridden or shown under saddle.
Aurora is no stranger to competition, having been very successfully shown in hand as a youngster by owner Nick Phillips and at dressage shows since Lehua Custer has had her in training. She has received great scores and many compliments along the way. Aurora has a very promising career ahead and we congratulate her owner on choosing to show her first and breed her later.
The functionality tests were held on Sunday – Aurora and Lehua were ready. They rode a beautiful test, clearly in harmony and both enjoying the experience. There were 9 other 4 year olds competing and riding the same test – all stallions.
When the results were announced, Aurora and Lehua had won the functionality for the 4 year old division with a 22.917 (out of a possible 25). This marks the first time a mare has competed in functionality in this age division (and against the stallions) and won! This functionality score was also the 4th highest of the entire competition and some of the stallions who rode the same test have competed at Grand Prix level.
Congratulations to Aurora KR, Ketcham Ranch, for breeding such an exceptional mare, Nick Phillips (owner) and Lehua Custer (trainer). We can’t wait to follow this mare’s career as it develops.
